How Do I Clone an Application on My Server?October 14, 2014

In this KB

  • Cloning an application

This guide explains how you can clone an application on the same server on which is running the original. You can do this to create different environments (dev, test, prod …) to integrate into your development workflow. If you pair application cloning with our git deployment feature, you can build powerful and simple workflows.

If you are interested in cloning your whole server instead of only one application, please read here.

Step 1: Go to Application Management

Log into the Cloudways Platform with your credentials. Click on Applications in the top menu bar and then select your target application from the list.

Step 2: Clone Application

  1. Click on the Access Detail section under the Application Management area. Here, we have picked a WordPress application.
  2. Then, click on the circular grid icon located at the bottom right of the page.
  3. Finally, click on the Clone App button to clone your app.

Once you have clicked on Clone App, a message will prompt you to choose a server. Pick Same Server if you want to clone your app on the same server. Otherwise, select your server from the list, and then click on the Submit button.

Step 3: Cloning  Successfully Completed

Note: First, you may need to update the database to version MySQL 5.6 or MariaDB 10. Otherwise, you may receive an error message.

Once the databases are upgraded, you will see the following:

You will get a message after effectively finishing the cloning process, and then you can access the cloned application.

That’s it. You have now learned how to clone an application on the same server.

This is for the old dashboard. I need info on the 2.0 dashboard. I cannot find how to clone an app.

  2. Bob Warrick says:

The how-to gives no guidance as to when to choose MySQL 5.6 vs. MariaDB 10 and a search of the knowledge base for “MySQL vs MariaDB” resulted in no search results.

  3. Ladislav Šulc says:

Hi, I cannot seem to be able to find how to clone an app within the new dashboard. Any advice? I can only clone the server, I need to be able to clone an app.

    Thank you.

Just go to the application in the dashboard, then you have a round icon on the bottom right of your screen. Hover over it and you will see the Delete App, Clone App and Add App option.
