Important Notice

Effective 2nd May 2023, Vultr cloud services are no longer available for new customers on our platform.

Launching and managing Vultr High Frequency Compute Instances just got a whole lot easier. Here’s how to set up blazing-quick infrastructure through the Cloudways Platform, then migrate the site across to the fastest architecture that Vultr offers.

Let’s dive deep to understand what these new High Frequency Compute Instances are and what makes them so differentiated from the standard instances.

Tip

Vultr is well-known for its computational power and robust SSD storage space. Currently, Vultr has 16 data centres around the globe, and Cloudways gives you complete freedom to develop and deploy on the ones closest to you and your clients for low latency.

Vultr High Frequency Compute Instances

Blazing Fast 3.8 GHz Processors

At the time of writing, Vultr High Frequency Instances are powered by Intel Skylake blazing-fast 3.8 GHz processors to turbocharge your favorite applications; whereas, standard nodes are generally clocked within the 2 GHz range.

Tip

Clock speeds are measured in gigahertz (GHz), with a higher number representing a higher clock speed.

A computer’s processor clock determines how fast your CPU can retrieve and interpret instructions. Thus, 3.8 GHz CPUs benefit in speedier delivery of content due to more efficient processes and script executions.

Larger and Faster Local SSD Storage

High Frequency Instances are equipped with a larger capacity NVMe Local SSD Storage, which not only increases the overall I/O throughput of the server but is also able to store more data. On the other hand, standard nodes come with traditional SATA SSD storage. The NVMe storage helps you take more significant advantage of High Frequency Instances by matching local storage performance with the increased throughput of fast processors.

Tip

NVMe storage offers greater Read/Write speed than traditional SSD drives.

How Can I Use a Vultr High Frequency Node?

You can deploy a new Vultr High Frequency Node in just a few clicks. Or, you can upgrade your current machine to a High Frequency Node regardless of your existing infrastructure provider.

Launch a New High Frequency Server

New High Frequency Server — Accessing the Cloudways Platform

Log in to your Cloudways Platform using your email address and password.

  1. From the top menu bar, open Servers.

  2. Then, click Add Server.

New High Frequency Server — Launching a New Server

  1. Select the application you want to deploy.

  2. Name your Application.

  3. Next, type the name of your Server.

  4. Select your Project.

  5. Select Vultr as an infrastructure provider.

  6. Choose High Frequency as the type of your node.

  7. Next, choose the desired Server Size.

  8. Choose your server location from the list.

  9. Finally, click Launch Now.

Important

Please note that the High Frequency Instances are subject to availability from Vultr.

That’s it! Your High Frequency Instance will be deployed in a few minutes.

Tips

Once your Server and Application are created, then don’t forget to follow these quick steps mentioned below.

Apply Your Domain Name to Your Application

You need to tell Cloudways which domain you’re going to apply to your application (e.g., www.example.com):

  1. Go to your Application Settings.

  2. Next, click Domain Management.

  3. Now, enter your website name in the Primary Domain field. It should be FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name), like example.com.

  4. Click Save Changes.

Setting your Site Online

If you have completed all the above steps and also got your site the way you wished to have, then it is time to get it online. First, point your DNS records to Cloudways; therefore, you need to host your DNS records at your Domain or DNS manager.

Tip

You can also subscribe to DNS Made Easy Add-on, where we manage and take care of your DNS records, so you don’t have to worry about hosting your DNS records somewhere else.

The following steps are to be completed on your DNS records hosting provider:o

  1. Log into your DNS provider panel or console.

  2. Navigate to your DNS Management page. The location and name of this page vary by provider, but it can usually be found under either Domain Management or Advanced Settings.

  3. Select the domain name that you want to update.

  4. Locate the Records section. Create an A Record and then complete the below fields: Host/Name (subdomain, i.e., the first part of your domain before the first dot)Value (the IP address of your server, can be gathered from server details over Cloudways Platform)TTL (‘Time To Live’ is a propagation time. We recommend setting this value to the lowest allowed value from your provider).

  5. Finally, save your changes.

Securing Your Site With an SSL Certificate

Let’s get ourselves an SSL certificate for our website. This is offered for free as part of your Cloudways package.

  1. In the Application Management menu, select an SSL Certificate.

  2. Under SSL Management, you will see Let’s Encrypt selected by default (If not, then choose it using the dropdown list).

  3. Input your email address and the domain name you want to secure using the SSL certificate. If you’re going to deploy a Wildcard SSL, see How to Install Let’s Encrypt SSL Certificate.

  4. Finally, click Install Certificate.

  5. Your application will have its Free Let’s Encrypt SSL Certificate deployed in a few minutes. If this is your first time attempting this process, you will be prompted to force HTTPS redirection.

Technical Note

Let’s Encrypt will try to resolve your server IP address upon certificate request. Services that obfuscate your IP address might stop this from happening. We recommend that you use a CNAME _acme-challenge, which points at your *.cloudwaysapps.com URL and is not proxied through any 3rd party services such as Cloudflare, Sucuri, or any other similar WAF services.

Upgrade an Existing Standard Server to a Vultr High Frequency Server

Upgrading an existing server to a High Frequency Server is only possible by cloning the server, regardless of whether you already use Vultr or not.

Important

Once the new server is deployed, you need to update your DNS records for your applications because your new server will have a different IP address due to cloning.

Cloning — Selecting the Desired Server

Log in to your Cloudways Platform using your email address and password.

  1. From the top menu bar, open Servers.

  2. Then, select your desired server.

  3. Click and click Clone Server.

4. You will be prompted for the cloning process. Click Yes.

Cloning — Launch Cloning Process

  1. Select Vultr as your infrastructure provider.

  2. Choose High Frequency as the type of your node.

  3. Next, select your desired Server Size.

  4. Select your server location.

  5. Finally, click the Clone Server.

Important

Please note that the High Frequency Instances (like all other instances) are subjected to availability from Vultr or the respective provider.

That’s it! Your High Frequency Instance will be cloned and deployed in a few minutes.

Please bear in mind that the cloning process only creates an identical copy of your site contents. It does not merge previously applied configurations or settings through the Platform. Once the cloning process is completed, you will need to follow the following steps to get your site online from your new server:

FAQs

Can I scale from a Standard Vultr Server to a Vultr High Frequency Server?

Currently, it is not possible to vertically scale from Vultr Standard Instance to a Vultr High Frequency Instance or vice versa. However, you can clone your server to go to a High Frequency Instance or vice versa.

Can I keep my same IP when cloning my server to Vultr High Frequency?

No, the new cloned server will have a different IP address; therefore, you need to point your DNS records to the new server IP after the cloning process.

I am trying to choose a bigger server size, yet the Cloudways Platform is telling me that the selected server is not available within the selected region, what can I do?

Unfortunately, we do not have any control over Vultr server distribution and availability. As per Vultr, unavailability is due to the massive demand for High Frequency Nodes, which is replenished but sold very quickly. The recommendation is to either select the nearest region where the server type is available or choose another server that can handle the forecasted load until the required server unit is available.
