You can recover deleted applications and servers within fourteen days (14) of deletion using the Cloudways Platform. The application or server you try to recover must be backed up at least once. Previously, only Cloudways Support could recover an application or server for you, but now you can take full advantage of this utility.

This guide has two sections; the first section explains how to recover an application and the second section explains how to recover a server.

Important Notes To Remember

  • Only users with a full account can use this feature.

  • Deleted servers or applications without any available backup cannot be recovered.

  • Deleted staging applications can not be recovered.

  • When you recover an application, it does not check the minimum requirements, settings, and packages required for that application to run on that particular server; therefore, please ensure that your application is fully compatible with the server.

  • When you recover a server and downscale it, it does not check if the applications on that particular server will remain compatible with the smaller server size; therefore, please ensure that your server is fully compatible.

How to Recover a Deleted Application

You can easily recover your deleted application on the same server as before or on a different server.

Application recovery means that your application's web files and database are recovered from the last available backup. In other words, only the contents of your public_html and private_html directories along with the database are recovered.

Important

The recovered application(s) should be treated as a new application. The new application has a new default Cloudways Application URL; therefore, domains and any associated DNS records must be updated to take the websites live. If you recover your application on a different server, you must update A records to point your domain to a new server.

Log in to your Cloudways Platform using your credentials.

  1. From the top menu bar, open Applications.

  2. Next, click Recover Application.

  3. From the given list, choose your Application and click Recover Application.

  4. Here, you can recover your application on the same server, a different server, or a new server. In this demonstration, we are selecting the same server it was hosted on before.

  5. Finally, click Continue.

The application recovery may take a few minutes, depending on the application size. You can visit the FAQs section below to get more information.

How to Recover a Deleted Server

Server recovery means that all your applications hosted on that deleted server are recovered from the last available backup. In this recovery process, all the application’s web files (contents of public_html and private_html directories) and databases are recovered.

Important

The recovered server and application(s) should be treated as a new server and application. The new server will have a different IP address, and the applications will have a new default Cloudways Application URL, e.g., http://wordpress-544566-1745104.cloudwaysapps.com; therefore, domains and any associated DNS records must be updated to take the websites live.

Log in to your Cloudways Platform using your credentials.

  1. From the top menu bar, open Servers.

  2. Next, click Recover Server.

  3. From the given list, choose your Server and click Recover Server.

  4. Here, you can change your Server Specifications, such as infrastructure provider, server size, application web files & database size (in the case of AWS and GCP), and server location.

  5. Finally, click Recover.

    Important

Please note that you can not select a server of a lower size. It has to be the same size or bigger.

The server recovery time may vary based on the size of the applications. You can visit the FAQs section below to get more information.

Why my deleted application/server is not showing up in the list to recover?

The following are the reasons if you do not see your desired application or server to recover:

  • The fourteen days (14) retention period of your backup might have expired; hence the backups have been removed.
