How to Set Up a WordPress Multisite on Cloudways

Step 1: Go to Server and Install Multisite WordPress

Log into the Cloudways Platform with your credentials. Next, install a WordPress multisite application using this guide.

Step 2: WordPress Login

Enter your login credentials and click Log In. Your application login credentials and other information are available on the Cloudways Platform.

Step 3: Network Settings

Go to Tool and select Network Setup. Click on deactivate your plugins (in the warning message as seen below).

Step 4: Disabling All the Plugins

  • Select Plugins, then select Deactivate and click the Apply button.

Now all the plugins are deactivated.

Important

When setting up a WordPress Multisite network, deactivate all installed plugins as this is also suggested by WordPress. Once you have verified that the WordPress Multisite network is up and running, start activating the plugins you wish to use with the multisite network.

Step 5: Creating Sub-domains

Choose the option as per your requirement, in our case; it is sub-domains.

Step 6: Wp-config and .htaccess Settings

  • Go to Tools and click on Network Setup. Edit the .htaccess and wp-config.php as instructed in the following image.

Step 7: Adding Sub-domain (WordPress Dashboard)

  • Go to My Sites and click on Network Admin. Click on Sites and then add a new site as per your requirement, in our example, it is site1.mydomain.com.

  • You can add as many sub-domains as per your need, in our case, we have added two sub-domains, i.e. site1 and site2.

Step 8: Insert the Primary Domains (Cloudways Platform)

Navigate to the Application Management area in Cloudways Platform and click on the Domain Management section:

  1. Add the Domain Name as per your requirement, in our case; it is cloudways.icu and click Save Changes.

  2. Add all your subdomains, in our case, it is support, in the Additional Domains option. Click Save Changes.

  3. Then, log into your domain registrar and add A Record for all your subdomains.
